KenTheMan, despite her initial interest in poetry, had never envisioned herself becoming a rapper at a young age. However, in 10th grade, around 2010, she began rapping, often cutting classes with friends to rap in cars or whenever the school was closed.
In 2014, she experienced heartbreak from her rapper boyfriend, which temporarily dampened her passion for rap. After a period of struggle, she regained her interest and love for the genre after watching a Nicki Minaj documentary and engaging in marathon listening sessions of Lil Wayne’s music.
Her first song was a freestyle over G Herbo and Nicki Minaj’s “Chiraq” beat, which she directed towards her ex-boyfriend, ironically the person who first took her to the studio. In 2015, she released her first mixtape, “Kenny’s Black,” completing the project in just two weeks.
In 2017, she began gaining prominence with the release of “Deserve,” a dancehall-infused track that explores failed relationships and the associated pain.
Her fame further skyrocketed with the release of her hit song “He Be Like” in 2019, which has accumulated over 12 million streams on Spotify. Interestingly, she released this song while working as a driver for the local food restaurant service, “DoorDash.”
The 29-year-old dropped her first EP, titled “4 da 304’s,” in 2020. The EP consists of 10 songs with a total runtime of 28 minutes and 3 seconds. She and her manager, Melissa Keklak, funded the release themselves.
In 2021, she released the project “What’s My Name,” which was recognized by Rolling Stone as the 16th best hip-hop album of the year. Additionally, on October 14, 2022, she released the single “Not My Nigga.”
