Interesting thoughts, N. I'll confess, I hadn't thought much of Khara's future; I'd always thought they were formed solely for the new EVA movies.

However, if they do any post-EVA material, they'll be worth looking out for. They've displayed some impressive technical chops so far.

Nice write-up that pretty much sums it up.

I wanted to add that the realities of the production also probably shaped the form of 1.11. Anno's created a new studio and hired new staff. He wants to get the ball rolling. He wants to get the studio established (in terms of finances and talent), secure production dollars and do big budget movies (the way his colleagues like Miyazaki do). How does he do that? By launching his new studio with a movie absolutely guaranteed to get tons of production money from outside sources and tsunamis of ticket, DVD and merchandise sales: a new Eva.

OK, once you decide on "a new Eva," how to get a film out there fast to start paying the bills? By adhering closely to the TV show's first few eps (to skip some of the cost and time of entirely new scripts and animation), and adding a bravura finale to show the world he's back, means business, and better than ever. I'd say he succeeded in all of that.

As much as I'm looking forward to the rest of Rebuild, I'm even more intrigued by what Khara may accomplish after. I suspect that Anno is looking to rival Ghibli, i.e. produce big-budget anime films that perform globally. I doubt he'll ever go back to the rinky dink budgets of made-for-TV or even OVA anime.
