Mr Holland "kind of cheesy"? Only "kind of"? But I say, cheese is part of any balanced diet. "Close to tears"? Heck, I wept the first time I saw it, sitting right out there in public on an airplane. An AIRPLANE movie and the tears are squirting all over the place. But darn that movie got to me. Sure it aims for the emotions, but it's all about vocation, and middle age, and what you find yourself doing instead of what you yearned to do, and says yeah it's tough, but also maybe it's okay. But it's also tough. As Mr Holland is to composition, Mr Bailey is to architecture.

Suggestions for other films on the reading list this semester:

To Sir, With Love
Half Nelson
Blackboard Jungle
And perhaps my favourite...
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Tavernier made a teaching movie called Ca Tout Commence Aujourdhui, which is excellent.

Of the Hollywood baloney, I'd see Stand and Deliver again (I've never seen Freedom Writers, but I think I'd like to give it a look).

And don't count out The School of Rock.

"Half Nelson" and "The 400 Blows" come to mind, at least for junior high-aged education.
