@Justin: I agree with you about "The Girl...". I really liked the premise, and thought it worked quite well as a time travel film, but it did get bogged down a little towards the end with all of the melodrama. Nevertheless, I still liked it quite a bit.

Thanks for reminding me of Iso. I haven't seen "Denno Coil" yet, but I've heard some very good things about it. AFAIK, it's not available in the States, but I'll be sure to check it out when it does become available.

You could write another article that just discusses the work of directors who work primarily in the TV/OVA realm. There are a host of talented directors in that arena.

Shinkai has some beautiful moments in his movies, and "Voices of a Distant Star" should be required viewing for any animation (or even romance) fan. I think he has a ways to go to be in the same realm as Miyazaki, but he certainly has the same aesthetics.

"The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" looked beautiful and I certainly see a lot of Ghibli influence, but I felt like it kind of faltered at the end. It's still a good movie even if it felt quite uneven. I've yet to see Summer Wars and hope it comes out to stateside soon.

Personally I'm keeping my eye on Mitsuo Iso, the director of the brilliant "Denno Coil" TV series. It felt like a Ghibli series taking on The Matrix. He did animation on my favorite Ghibli movie ("Only Yesterday") so the pedigree is there.

Worth noting that Mamoru Hosoda was probably considered by Ghibli to be the successor to Miyazaki at one point. He was under the studio's employ and set to direct Howl's Moving Castle, but for some reason dropped out during the pre-production phase. Miyazaki took the project back to square one.

A lot of people have compared The Girl Who Leapt Through Time to Ghibli work. It does feel something like a cross between the work of Miyazaki and Takahata.

Satoshi Kon is my favorite anime director right now--I think his recent work has been better than Miyazaki's--but if you're looking for someone to replace Miyazaki as the arbiter of childlike wonder, it isn't Kon. His work is concerned with different, darker things.

Shinkai is an obvious choice, but the guy desperatly need some fresh subject matter to reach his full potential. Enough about you unrequited love, high school romances and long distance relationships already.

Truly informative essay, Jason, thank you. Your final summation is accurate, I think; but, it's great to take a look at the work of some of these other animators. Makoto Shinkai looks incredible.
