Filmwell’s Book of Filmmaker Wisdom: Excerpt 2 – Godard

David Dark (author of recently reviewed Sacredness of Questioning Everything) slapped up a clip from Vivre sa vie over at his blog Peer Pressure Is Forever. And it compelled me to do the same here:

There is a very fine line between Godard the ad hoc blowhard intellectualese grammarian, and Godard the conjuror of incisively modern spiritual epithets. In this clip, we find him in the latter form.

  1. Help me out, Mr Leary? What are we watching? Who is this man? Who is the young woman? Optional Question: Why are all women in French films gorgeous, where that doesn’t seem to be required of the men?

Here’s what I noticed. That when she turns and looks at me, it’s very hard to attend to what is being said. And that when she asks the man about love, he puts the bafflegab into high gear. Perhaps he’s as arrested by her direct attention as I am?

    Beyond that… I’m stuck. Qu’est-ce que c’est?
